Aims
- Enhance clinical skills in minor illness management and develop decision-making to identify red flags.
Learning Outcomes
By completing the Minor Illness Module, participants will be able to:
- Differentiate between self-limiting conditions and those requiring urgent medical attention. Red Flag Identification
- Recognise critical red flags in ENT, respiratory, skin, abdominal, gynae, and eye conditions. Understand the appropriate referral pathways for patients with high-risk presentations. Decision-Making and Management
- Apply clinical decision-making to confidently assess and manage common minor illnesses. Implement evidence-based treatment plans for conditions such as headaches, back pain, skin infections, and respiratory disorders. Safety Netting
- Communicate effectively with patients to provide clear safety-netting advice and follow-up instructions. Understand the importance of patient education to enhance self-management of minor illnesse
Pre-requisites
- Must be a registered nurse, pharmacist, or physician associate with experience in primary or urgent care.
- Completion of a course in clinical assessment and history taking is recommended but not compulsory.

What Will You Learn in the Minor Illness Module?
- Learn to structure a patient-centered consultation, including effective open and closed questioning techniques.
- Develop skills in obtaining a thorough medical history, focusing on presenting complaints, past medical history, and family/social history.
- Gain techniques to identify red flags and early warning signs that require escalation or referral.
- Enhance communication skills to provide patient education and address patient concerns confidently.
- Understand the common causes of headaches (e.g., tension headaches, migraines) and when to suspect serious conditions such as subarachnoid hemorrhage or meningitis.
- Learn to differentiate between mechanical back pain and more serious conditions such as cauda equina syndrome or spinal fractures.
- Explore the use of clinical decision-making frameworks to confidently assess and manage patients presenting with headaches or back pain.
- Understand appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological management strategies.
- Manage common conditions such as otitis media, otitis externa, sinusitis, and sore throats (e.g., tonsillitis).
- Identify red flags such as unexplained hearing loss, stridor, or persistent hoarseness.
- Understand treatment options, including the appropriate use of antibiotics and patient education on self-care.
- Assess and manage conditions such as upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs), bronchitis, and asthma exacerbations.
- Learn to identify respiratory distress, cyanosis, or signs of pneumonia that require urgent intervention.
Skin Disorders
- Diagnose and manage conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, impetigo, dermatitis, and fungal infections. Understand the role of topical therapies, including steroids, emollients, and antifungal treatments.
- Recognise serious conditions such as cellulitis, necrotizing fasciitis, and melanoma. Develop skills in identifying skin cancers and the need for specialist referral.
Gynae Conditions
- Understand common gynecological presentations, including vaginal discharge, irregular bleeding, and pelvic pain.
- Gain knowledge of managing conditions such as bacterial vaginosis, thrush, and urinary tract infections (UTIs).
- Explore the management of abnormal uterine bleeding and indications for further investigation or referral
- Access e-learning modules on contraception and menopause to complement classroom discussions.
Abdominal Pain
- Assess and differentiate between common causes of abdominal pain, such as gastritis, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and gastroenteritis.
- Identify red flags, including signs of acute abdomen, appendicitis, pancreatitis, or biliary colic.
- Develop clinical decision-making skills to provide effective treatment and safety netting advice.
- Learn when and how to refer patients for urgent or specialist care.
