Course Summary

This minor illness course is for advanced nurse practitioners, allied  healthcare practitioners and  independent non medical prescribers working towards advanced roles seeing and treating adults in primary care and community settings including general practice and walk in pharmacies. A case study approach is used to explore differential diagnoses, and pharmacological and non pharmacological interventions including safety netting and worsening care advice.
On completion of the Minor Illness Course, you will be able to assess patients with a range of minor illness conditions of the respiratory, abdominal, gastrointestinal, dermatology, ENT, eye conditions, gynae, sexual health, contraception and mental health presentations in urgent care, general practice, walk in centres and community settings.

Aims 

This  minor illness course is for nurse practitioners, pharmacists, advanced paramedics and allied healthcare professionals wishing to develop skills in clinical decision-making, identifying red flags and management of minor illness presentations in general practice, urgent care and walk-in centres. 

Pre Requisites

  • Be a registered healthcare professional with a minimum of 2years post qualifying experience.
  • Relevant workplace opportunities and organisational support with an identified mentor is encouraged to support completion of skills portfolio in clinical environment and improve competence after attending the minor illness course. 

*** This minor illness course is suitable for healthcare professionals new in the role with limited experience seeing and treating patients independently.
***Completion of this course does not award competence or the title of Advanced Practitioner. This is obtained with experience, mentorship and completion of relevant educational courses.

Assessment

There is an MCQ to be completed at the end of each learning unit on this minor illness course.

Learning Outcomes 

  • Demonstrate knowledge of pathophysiology in management of minor illnesses.
  • Critically consider ethical and legal issues that influence decision-making in seeing and treating minor ailments and working in independent roles.
  • Reflect on risk management constraints when planning a safe discharge or referral to other agencies and members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Develop skills in ensuring clinical practice is evidence based through engagement with local organisation policy and current health strategy in primary care.
  • Recognise importance of multi-professional working for effective and safe management of minor ailments.

Minor Illness Skills Portfolio
Registered healthcare professionals who have been qualified for at least 2 years and wish to work in primary care settings in the UK are eligible to attend.
Yes, this course is accredited by CPD UK with 30 cpd credits, and delegates will receive a certificate from Belmatt Healthcare Training as well as a certificate from the accreditation agency.
Delegates interested in applying the course towards a Master's or degree program should discuss with their course director at the university to explore the possibility of APeL (Accreditation of prior learning)
Yes, this is a postgraduate training course. While some aspects of course are aligned to level 6 and 7 advanced practice guidelines, it is not a Level 7 course and you cannot receive Level 7 credits,
Attendees must be registered healthcare professionals with at least 2 years of qualification and an interest in working within primary care.
You can access this course for 3 months after the webinar.

No, this course does not confer competency to practice as an advanced practitioner. It provides decision-making tools to see and treat patients
