Course Title: Minor Injuries Assessment and Management Course

Target Audience: Advanced Practitioners, Nurses, Paramedics, Pharmacists, and Allied Healthcare Professionals
Duration: 3 Days (Classroom-Based)
Delivery Mode: Interactive Lectures, Hands-On Practical Sessions, Group Discussions, and Case Studies

Time: 09h00 – 16h00.  Venue: Fulham, London, SW6 2TW


Course Aims:

To provide healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills to assess, diagnose, and manage minor injuries safely and effectively and  improve clinical decision-making skills, focusing on identifying red flags and appropriate referrals.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course, delegates will:

  1. Understand the pathophysiology, assessment, and management of common upper and lower limb musculoskeletal injuries.
  2. Recognise red flags and know when to escalate care or refer to specialist services.
  3. Develop confidence in assessing and managing burns, bites, head and spinal injuries, and upper and lower limb injuries.
  4. Understand the ethical and legal considerations in minor injuries management.
  5. Gain practical skills in applying splints, strapping, and wound dressings.
  6. Develop skills in writing accurate and comprehensive statements for medico-legal purposes.

Course Programme

Day 1: Head and Spine Injuries & Ethical/Legal Considerations Burns and Bites

08:30 – 09:00 Registration and Welcome

09:00  Head Injuries

  • Types of head injuries (mild, moderate, severe)
  • Clinical assessment (GCS, red flags)
  • Management and safety netting

10:30 – 10:45 Break

10:45  Head and Spinal Injuries

  • Mechanism of injury and red flags
  • Examination of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine
  • Management principles and immobilisation techniques

12:00 – 13:00 Lunch Break

13:00 Burns and Bites

  • Types of burns and classification
  • First aid and wound management
  • Animal and insect bites: Risks and management

15h00 Ethical and Legal Issues in Minor Injuries Management: Consent and capacity, Duty of care and negligence, Documentation and confidentiality

 15:30 Writing Statements for Legal Purposes: Structure and content of medico-legal reports. Practical workshop: Writing a statement

Day 2: Upper Limb Injuries

09:00 Anatomy of the Shoulder and Inspection and palpation. Range of motion tests. Strength tests. Special tests (e.g., Hawkins-Kennedy, Neer’s, Apprehension test)

10:30 Break

10:45  Shoulder Injuries and Disorders. Treatment options and management. When to refer or x-ray.

12:00 – 13:00 Lunch Break

13:00 Elbow Examination: Inspection and palpation, Range of motion tests, Special tests (e.g., lateral epicondylitis, medial epicondylitis)

14:00 Wrist and Hand Examination:Inspection and palpation: Range of motion tests,Strength testsSpecial tests (e.g., Tinel’s, Phalen’s, Finkelstein’s)

15:00 – 15:15 Break

15:15 Practical session on examination techniques using structured assessment sheets to guide examination techniques. Differentials, red flags and management in primary care settings.

16:00 Q&A and Course Evaluation

Day 3: Lower Limb Injuries & Practical Applications

09:00 Hip Examination: Inspection and palpation, Range of motion tests, Strength tests, Special tests (e.g., Trendelenburg, FABER test)

10:00 – 10:15 Break

10:15 Knee Examination: Inspection and palpation, Range of motion tests, Special tests (e.g., Lachman’s, McMurray’s, Anterior Drawer test)

12:00 – 13:00 Lunch Break

13:00  Ankle and Foot Examination Inspection and palpation, Range of motion tests, Strength tests, Special tests (e.g., Thompson’s, Anterior Drawer test for ankle)

15:00 Tea

15:15  Neurological and Vascular Assessment : Dermatomes and myotomes, Reflexes, Peripheral pulses

  • Practical session

16:00 Course Wrap-Up and Evaluation

  • Key takeaways from the course
