Course Overview

This Paediatric Minor Illness Course was designed to focus on the presentations of minor illnesses specifically in children. As such, this course is specifically tailored for healthcare professionals working with children in primary care, general practice, and urgent care settings. Participants will gain the knowledge and skills required to assess, diagnose, treat, and manage minor paediatric conditions, with an emphasis on evidence-based practice, family-centred care, legal and ethical considerations, and professional collaboration.

Aims

The Paediatric Minor Illness Course aims to develop understanding and insights into common minor illnesses in the paediatric population and integrate current research, guidelines, and best practices in paediatric minor illness management.

Objectives

By the end of the course, participants should be able to:

  • Recognise the signs and symptoms of common minor illnesses in children, such as respiratory, gastrointestinal, skin, eye, and ear conditions.
  • Utilise evidence-based interventions and medications specific to paediatric patients.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills to engage children and families in care decisions.
  • Work effectively with nurse practitioners, paramedics, and pharmacists to provide cohesive care.
  • Adhere to the legal and ethical guidelines specific to paediatric care.
  • Provide education and support to families regarding disease prevention, management, and overall child well-being.
  •  Demonstrate flexibility in providing care across primary care, general practice, and urgent care environments.

Who Should Attend?

  1. Nurse Practitioners: Registered nurses with specialized training, seeking to enhance their knowledge and skills in paediatric minor illness care.
  2. Paramedics: Emergency care providers looking to sharpen their abilities in recognizing and managing minor paediatric illnesses in urgent care settings.
  3. Pharmacists: Professionals engaged in community or hospital pharmacy, aiming to deepen their understanding of paediatric pharmacology and minor illness management.
  4. Other Healthcare Professionals: Other primary care providers who work closely with children and require specialized knowledge in paediatric minor illnesses.

Pre-requisites

To participate, one must be registered healthcare professionals and be currently working or planning to work with children in primary care, general practice, or urgent care settings. By catering to a diverse group of healthcare providers, this course fosters interdisciplinary collaboration and ensures that all professionals involved in paediatric care are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to provide high-quality, compassionate, and efficient care for minor illnesses in children. However, completion of this course does not confer competency. This is gained with experience and mentorship.

09h00 – 10h30 Assessment and Examination of Children

  • Developmental Milestones in children
  • Red flags in children
  • Physical Examination of the sick child
  • Managing pyrexia and pain in children
  • Pain in children
  • Spotting the unwell child

10h30 – 12h30 ENT Conditions

  • Recognise and manage otitis media, otitis externa, and glue ear in children, including identifying red flags such as hearing loss and speech delays, and knowing when to refer to ENT.
  •  Differentiate viral and bacterial sore throats using FeverPAIN and Centor criteria, and recognise red flags for tonsillitis and quinsy that require urgent referral.
  • Understand key features of adenovirus, hand, foot, and mouth disease, and recognise signs of croup and stridor requiring escalation.
  • Differentiate between allergic, viral, and bacterial causes of nasal congestion, manage sinusitis, and recognise complications like orbital cellulitis.
  •  Identify common causes of epistaxis, manage red flags for underlying conditions, and safely handle nasal foreign bodies in children.

13h30 – 15h00 Respiratory Conditions in Children

  • Presentation and management of viral URTIs, including the common cold and croup.
  • Recognising bacterial superinfections.
  • Bronchiolitis: Diagnosis, management, and when to refer.
  • Pneumonia: Differentiating viral vs bacterial pneumonia and red flags to consider
  • Recognising serious signs in children presenting with respiratory symptoms

15h00 – 16h00 Asthma management of children in primary care

  • Overview of viral-induced wheeze vs asthma.
  • Diagnosis of asthma in children under 5 years.
  • Managing acute asthma attacks in children.
  • GINA guidelines for asthma management in children.

  • Dr Sam Thenabadu (Paediatric A&E Consultant and deputy dean Kings College University will discuss spotting the sick child and common gastrointestinal disorders
  • Dr Varun Kumar is a doctor with a specialist interest in dermatology and rashes in darker skin.
  • Ameet Gordhan is a clinical pharmacist with specialist interest in respiratory. He will discuss management of asthma in children
