Course Overview
Minor illnesses form a significant part of healthcare practice. In the UK, it is estimated that between 18% and 37% of 57 million annual GP consultations are for minor illnesses. Therefore, this Paediatric Minor Illness Course was designed to focus on the presentations of minor illnesses specifically in children. As such, this course is specifically tailored for healthcare professionals working with children in primary care, general practice, and urgent care settings.
Participants will gain the knowledge and skills required to assess, diagnose, treat, and manage minor paediatric conditions, with an emphasis on evidence-based practice, family-centred care, legal and ethical considerations, and professional collaboration. In addition, the curriculum includes focused modules on respiratory, gastrointestinal, skin, eye, and ear conditions, common allergies, growth and developmental concerns, mental health, immunizations, and preventive care.
Aims
The Paediatric Minor Illness Course aims to develop understanding and insights into common minor illnesses in the paediatric population and integrate current research, guidelines, and best practices in paediatric minor illness management.
Objectives
By the end of the course, participants should be able to:
- Identify and Assess Minor Illnesses: Recognise the signs and symptoms of common minor illnesses in children, such as respiratory, gastrointestinal, skin, eye, and ear conditions.
- Implement Appropriate Interventions: Utilise evidence-based interventions and medications specific to paediatric patients.
- Communicate Effectively with Children and Families: Demonstrate effective communication skills to engage children and families in care decisions.
- Collaborate Across Disciplines: Work effectively with nurse practitioners, paramedics, and pharmacists to provide cohesive care.
- Apply Legal and Ethical Principles: Adhere to the legal and ethical guidelines specific to paediatric care.
- Educate and Counsel Families: Provide education and support to families regarding disease prevention, management, and overall child well-being.
- Adapt to Different Healthcare Settings: Demonstrate flexibility in providing care across primary care, general practice, and urgent care environments.

Pre-requisites
To participate, one must be registered healthcare professionals and be currently working or planning to work with children in primary care, general practice, or urgent care settings.
By catering to a diverse group of healthcare providers, this course fosters interdisciplinary collaboration and ensures that all professionals involved in paediatric care are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to provide high-quality, compassionate, and efficient care for minor illnesses in children. However, completion of this course does not confer competency. This is gained with experience and mentorship.

- Recognising and management of meningococcal diseases in children.
- Managing Atopic eczema
Learning Unit 2 : Abdominal And Genitourinary
- Abdominal Pain in children including diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting and nausea.
- GI Disorders in children including lactose intolerance and other milk intolerances
- Management of UTI’s in children
Learning Unit 3: Endocrine and Auto Immune

Learning Unit 5: Head, Eyes, Ears, Nose, Throat (HEENT)
- Developmental red flags
- Common ENT presentations
- Diagnosis and management of otitis media , externa and glue ear.
- Adenovirus in children, Sinusitis and nose bleeds. The red throat
- Overview of eye conditions in children
Learning Unit 6 :Respiratory
- Respiratory conditions. Asthma management in children.
- Includes techniques for listening to the paediatric chest and how to auscultate
- Bronchiolitis, chest infections, COVID-19 in children and viral infections
