Caring for children and Adolescents in Primary Care

Course Summary

Our paediatric courses are designed to meet the needs of nurses, junior doctors and allied professions who work with children.  The  paediatric courses focus on paediatric training for clinicians working in general practice, primary care, community settings and emergency departments. The courses include:

  1. Paediatric Minor Illness
  2. Paediatric Minor Injuries
  3. Safeguarding Children Level 3
  4. Mental Health Conditions in Adolescents and young people

Aims

Our paediatric courses aim to  provide healthcare professionals with advanced knowledge and skills, to enhance the health and wellbeing of children presenting to first contact, general practice and urgent care settings.

Objectives

These paediatric courses will:

  • Develop your knowledge of the implications of the main anatomical and physiological differences between adults and children, for the management of minor illness and injury.
  • Use clinical decision-making tools to recognise and evaluate patho-physiological features which can cause minor illness, and injuries in children and be able to refer or treat timeously.
  • Critically reflect, using your workbooks, the current evidence base and healthcare initiatives when treating children and apply these in clinical settings.
  • Demonstrate the ability to make safe clinical judgements through the use of holistic evidence based approach to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care of children and their families/carers.
  • Equip you with the skills to be able to identify safeguarding issues that may arise during a consultation.
  • Demonstrate the ability to identify and apply the current health strategy and policy when treating the paediatric population.

Entry Requirements

  • Have a UK or overseas degree from a recognised institution or equivalent professional or other qualification.
  • Hold professional registration with the NMC, HCPC, GMC or Allied Health Professional Body or Council are encouraged to have an identified mentor in general practice to complete competencies.
  • Work-based learning is central to the course. This approach allows you to manage and actively shape your own learning in the workplace, with the support of nurse mentors and primary care workforce tutors.
  • Some of the learning units require completion of the pre -requisite ELFH modules to be completed before the live zoom session

     

    Who Should Attend?

    • Healthcare professionals working with children
    • Clinicians wanting to advance their knowledge and skills to work independently in primary care settings such as general practice, urgent care, walk in centre, the community and pharmacies.
    • Delegates will come from a range of regulated healthcare professions such as nursing, pharmacy, therapeutic and diagnostic radiography, physiotherapy, paramedics, speech and language therapy, dietetics, and occupational health, who are working in environments where they see and treat children.
