Course Summary

There is nothing more important than ensuring the well-being of children and as clinicians, that we have the skills to identify when a child needs help and protection. It is therefore important that we are able to work together in partnership with other agencies so that we can respond to the needs and interests of families.

Course Content

This webinar on Safeguarding Children – Level 3 training course provides a thorough understanding of child protection by covering a breadth of topics relevant to anybody with a responsibility for safeguarding children and young people. This online Safeguarding Children – Level 3 training course covers the following:

• An understanding of what safeguarding children and young people
• Child development and negative influences
• An awareness of the key legislation and guidance about the safeguarding of vulnerable children and young people,
• How to be aware of your professional responsibilities, as well as those of your colleagues and partner organisations,
• Understand what is compassionate and self leadership and why it is important
• An overview of designated professionals and named practitioners and the role of national and regional safeguarding teams and national safeguarding steering groups.
• What are clinical reference groups and national safeguarding networks and their role
• Safeguarding Accountability and Assurance Framework
• How to be able to document and report concerns relating to child abuse or maltreatment, including:
  • Taking adequate history,
  • Performing a physical examination in ways that are deemed appropriate in line with current legislation relating to safeguarding and protection of children and young people,
  • Assessing parenting capacity,
  • The forms of abuse and signs of abuse, and
  • Recognising and responding to abuse, with specific guidance on note-taking and recording your concerns.
• Contributing to inter-agency assessments, as well as the gathering and sharing of information and where appropriate analysis of risk posed.
• How to participate in inter-agency working and be supportive to vulnerable children and young children, and their families/guardians where safeguarding concerns have been raised,
• How to be familiar with your local organisational protocols and referral processes to your local safeguarding team and/or social services, and how to minimise barriers in the referral process, and
• How to be aware of your information sharing responsibilities within and across multi-disciplinary teams.

• What happens when you ask the local safeguarding board for support : Who is your designated professional, How do you connect with them. Who is the GP Safeguarding Lead or designated lead where you work.

Lecturer Kenny Gibson

Kenny Gibson, MBE, RN, QN is the National Head of Safeguarding for NHS England. He oversees  several portfolios including Child Sexual Exploitation, Female Genital Mutilation and Looked After Children.

Kenny has held various operational, management and strategic posts in both community and public health but always with nursing at the heart of these roles.
