Welcome to the October Edition
Autumn approaches with the rain and reducing sunlight. My flower bulbs are back in hibernation, preparing for winter. In healthcare we will be preparing for the rainy weather and slippery ground which causes more trips and falls. Hence, we have started a range of lunch time webinars. On 16 October 2025, our Paediatric Consultant lecturer will be discussing head injuries in children. We have prepared a range of courses from Flu Updates, to a 3 day Minor Illness course to prepare you for winter.

I recently chaired and attended an international healthcare conference where I had the opportunity to meet Professor Tim Spector, founder of the ZOE Project and one of the world’s leading experts on the gut microbiome. Professor Spector’s research underscores how gut health impacts immunity, mood, metabolism, and chronic disease. His practical tips for a healthy microbiome include:
- Eat 30 different plants per week – Variety supports microbial diversity. So include nuts and seeds and different vegetables where possible,
- Include fermented foods – Such as kefir, sauerkraut, miso, and kimchi.
- Prioritise fibre – Aim for 30g daily from beans, oats, vegetables, and fruit. Fibre is more important than protein.
- Limit ultra-processed foods and artificial sweeteners. This includes foods with preservatives, fried foods.
- Choose quality over calories – Whole foods nourish your microbiome best.
- Stay hydrated and get good sleep – Both influence gut health and recovery.
It was especially interesting to learn that one course of antibiotics can take the gut about a year to recover the good microbiomes. Highlights the importance of good antimicrobial stewardship and avoiding inappropriate antibiotic prescribing. Educating service users is integral for a more collaborative approach to health. These insights continue to shape Belmatt’s teaching ethos — integrating nutritional awareness and holistic thinking into modern clinical education. Our session on antimicrobial stewardship highlights this in more depth. In this eLearning webinar, we discuss the latest updates in antimicrobial prescribing and when not to prescribe.
During the same conference, I met with Dr Mina Rajput and the directors of the Forgotten Patients Charity, who are championing awareness for Medically Unexplained Symptoms (MUS). Their work highlights the experiences of patients often left behind in traditional care models and the importance of empathetic, multidisciplinary management. This is especially the case in patients deemed ‘frequent attenders’, or in cases when diagnosis not made. Belmatt is working to integrate MUS and functional health awareness into future programmes, equipping clinicians to manage diagnostic uncertainty with confidence and compassion.
