Spirometry Workshop 26 November 2026

The course also focuses on interpreting spirometry results, including FEV₁, FVC, FEV₁/FVC ratios, obstructive and restrictive patterns, and bronchodilator responsiveness, using practical clinical examples.
  • Description
  • Curriculum

This one-day, practical spirometry course is designed for healthcare professionals working in primary care, community services, respiratory clinics and virtual wards who undertake spirometry or use results to support clinical decision-making.

Delivered by Ioulia Mariaki, an ARTP-qualified Respiratory Nurse Consultant, the course combines essential respiratory physiology with hands-on spirometry training, quality assurance and interpretation of results.

Delegates will learn how to prepare patients, operate a spirometer, perform calibration verification and equipment quality checks, obtain accurate and reproducible measurements, and recognise common technical errors.

The course also focuses on interpreting spirometry results, including FEV₁, FVC, FEV₁/FVC ratios, obstructive and restrictive patterns, and bronchodilator responsiveness, using practical clinical examples.

Key Topics Covered

  • Understanding spirometry: Respiratory physiology, indications, contraindications and patient preparation.

  • Practical spirometry: Equipment setup, calibration verification, infection prevention and performing accurate measurements.

  • Quality assurance: Acceptability, repeatability, troubleshooting and recognising poor-quality traces.

  • Interpreting results: FEV₁, FVC, FEV₁/FVC, flow-volume loops and recognising abnormal patterns.

  • Clinical application: Spirometry in asthma, COPD and other respiratory presentations, including when further investigation or referral is required.

Who Should Attend?

Practice nurses, respiratory nurses, advanced clinical practitioners, community nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists and other healthcare professionals involved in respiratory assessment.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, delegates will have developed the knowledge and practical skills to perform quality-assured spirometry, identify common technical errors and interpret results within their professional scope of practice.
