  1. Liver Function Tests (10:00 – 11:00):
    • Understand the components of liver function tests (LFTs) and their clinical relevance.
    • Identify common patterns in abnormal LFTs and link them to potential liver conditions.
    • Apply clinical reasoning to the management of abnormal LFT results, including when to refer.
  2. Thyroid Function Tests (11:00 – 12:00):
    • Explain the components of thyroid function tests (TFTs) and their indications.
    • Recognize common thyroid disorders based on TFT results.
    • Implement appropriate treatment pathways and safety-netting for patients with thyroid abnormalities.

Hour 1: Liver Function Tests (Dr. Jay Verma)

  1. Overview of Liver Physiology
    • Key functions of the liver in health.
  2. Components of LFTs
    • ALT, AST, ALP, bilirubin, albumin, and gamma-GT.
  3. Interpreting LFT Patterns
    • Hepatocellular vs. cholestatic patterns.
    • Recognizing alcohol-related liver disease and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
  4. Case Studies
    • Interactive discussion on real-world scenarios.
  5. Management and Referral Guidelines
    • Criteria for urgent referrals to hepatology.

Hour 2: Thyroid Function Tests (Aneela Tehseen)

  1. Overview of Thyroid Physiology
    • The role of TSH, free T4, and free T3 in thyroid function.
  2. Components of TFTs
    • TSH, T4, T3, and antibody tests (e.g., anti-TPO).
  3. Interpreting TFT Results
    • Hypothyroidism (primary and secondary).
    • Hyperthyroidism (Graves’ disease, toxic multinodular goiter).
  4. Case Studies
    • Common presentations in primary care.
    • Red flags and when to refer.
  5. Management Strategies
    • Initiating and monitoring treatment (levothyroxine, antithyroid drugs).
    • Importance of patient education and follow-up.
