Course Overview

This one-day practical skills course is designed for healthcare professionals who perform injections, intravenous access, and venepuncture in clinical practice and wish to strengthen their technical competence, confidence, and safety.

The course provides a structured, hands-on approach to injection techniques, IV injection principles, and phlebotomy, grounded in current UK clinical standards, infection prevention guidance, and professional accountability. Teaching focuses on safe technique, anatomical understanding, complication avoidance, and best practice, rather than speed or task-based learning alone.

Delivered by experienced clinicians and educators, this course supports practitioners working in primary care, urgent care, outpatient, community, and hospital settings.

Can Non Healthcare Professionals undertake phlebotomy and IV cannulation
Yes, In the UK, non-healthcare professionals who undertake a phlebotomy and injection technique course can gain foundational theoretical knowledge and practical skills, but their scope of practice remains limited unless employed in a setting with proper clinical governance and supervision
What can non healthcare professionals do after training (subject to employer policy and setting):

In some roles (e.g. healthcare assistant or phlebotomist trainee), they may perform venepuncture or injections under direct supervision within the NHS or private sector.
They can support phlebotomy clinics by preparing equipment, supporting patients, and assisting trained professionals.
Apply for trainee phlebotomy roles:

Completion of such a course improves chances of employment in healthcare settings where they can complete a competency-based induction.
They can demonstrate the technique on simulation arms or mannequins as part of skill development or further assessment.
Venepuncture must be done, under the supervision of an employer who takes responsibility for patient safety.
What they cannot do without registration or employment in a regulated setting:
Administer injections independently in clinical practice:
This includes vaccinations or intramuscular/subcutaneous medications – these require registered professionals or appropriate delegation under strict protocols.
Insert IV cannulas and administer IV fluids or medications:
IV therapy is restricted to registered professionals, or in rare cases, to delegated healthcare support workers in specific settings with defined scope and supervision.
Take blood in a non-approved setting:
What is the Uk Guidance ?
Training alone does not grant authorisation to perform procedures in public or clinical settings.
Competency must be assessed in practice by a qualified supervisor.
Employers must provide governance, insurance, and a clear scope of duties.
