Coding in General Practice is an intensive 3-hour live webinar designed to equip both clinical and non-clinical staff with a strong foundation in medical coding within a primary care setting. The course introduces the three main coding systems used in general practice—ICD, CPT, and SNOMED CT—explaining their structure, purpose, and practical application in day-to-day documentation.
The session blends theory with hands-on learning. Attendees will work through real case studies, practise assigning accurate codes, and participate in interactive exercises tailored to common scenarios in general practice. The training also highlights common coding errors, how to avoid them, and how to confidently navigate coding manuals and digital resources to ensure the use of correct, up-to-date codes.
The course concludes with a focused discussion on ethical coding and documentation, emphasising integrity, patient confidentiality, and best practice standards expected in primary care.
This webinar offers practical, immediately applicable skills that support safe, accurate, and efficient clinical documentation.
Aims
To provide participants with a robust understanding of the main coding systems used in general practice and to ensure they can apply coding principles accurately and confidently in real-world scenarios.
Objectives
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
• Distinguish between ICD, CPT, and SNOMED CT and describe their relevance to general practice.
• Assign appropriate codes to a range of conditions and procedures commonly seen in primary care.
• Navigate coding manuals and digital resources confidently to locate accurate, current codes.
• Recognise common coding pitfalls and apply strategies to avoid them.
• Apply ethical principles to coding and documentation while maintaining patient confidentiality.
Course Format
Programme Structure The training will consist of two in-person practical workshops and one follow-up webinar, scheduled as follows:
Friday, 21 November 2025 (12:30 – 15:30) In-person practical workshop focusing on SNOMED CT coding, record structure, and linking consultations to problems. Participants will engage in interactive exercises designed to improve coding accuracy and consistency.
Wednesday, 26 November 2025 (09:00 – 12:00) In-person practical workshop focusing on summarising correspondence, creating high-quality patient summaries, and developing coding standards. The session will include practical case examples and group-based application of learning.
Wednesday, 17 December 2025 (09:00 – 11:00) Virtual follow-up webinar reviewing implementation progress, addressing challenges encountered in practice, and providing an opportunity for Q&A; and troubleshooting.
All sessions will include practical demonstrations, shared templates, and a ‘Coding & Record Standards’ document that can be adapted locally by the practice team
Target Audience
• Clinical and non-clinical staff working in general practice who wish to strengthen their understanding and accuracy in medical coding.
